5 Reasons Why Moms Should Celebrate Immigration Heritage Month

Did you know that June is Immigrant Heritage Month? This month-long observance serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions immigrants have made to our communities. In this blog post, we will explore five reasons why immigrant moms should wholeheartedly embrace and celebrate Immigration Heritage Month.

They say that an immigrant never forgets the first day they set foot in their new home country. I can attest to the truth of this statement because even now, I vividly recall the mixture of curiosity and anxiety that coursed through my body as my Copa flight descended into LAX. Peering out the window at the twinkling lights of what appeared to be a slumbering city, I pondered the experiences that awaited me. I knew that the moment I stepped off the plane, a new chapter of my life would commence.

I landed in the US at midnight. The first person I laid eyes on was an Asian man, an airline worker patiently waiting outside the gate. As I navigated the halls of the airport, the next individuals I encountered were also Asians, diligently cleaning and maintaining the premises. Remarkably, the person who ultimately stamped my passport and granted me entry into the country was yet another Asian individual.

To this day, I find it symbolic that the initial faces I encountered beyond the gate were those of people of color, possibly fellow immigrants, toiling late into the night to keep the wheels of airport operations turning. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this served as my inaugural lesson in recognizing the immense contributions that immigrants make to this country.

5 Reasons Why Moms Should Celebrate Immigration Heritage Month

Let’s start by saying that we are immigrants every day of the year. However, I found Immigrant Heritage Month as an opportunity to educate and amplify our stories and and advocate for change.

This celebration also serves as a poignant reminder that immigrant mothers possess the power to carry forward legacies, challenge stereotypes, and redefine societal norms while raising our children. Here are 5 reasons to celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month y hacer bulla.

To Educate

This month reminds us of the countless immigrant mothers who navigate the challenges of a new culture, language barriers, and systemic barriers to provide for our families and create better opportunities for our children.

Immigrant Heritage Month shines a much-needed spotlight on these stories of resilience and the need for continued advocacy for the rights and fair treatment of immigrant mothers. It is a call to action for equal pay, gender equality, and the dismantling of systemic obstacles that hinder the progress and empowerment of immigrant women.

To Promote Cultural Diversity

As we celebrate Immigration Heritage Month, let us not only embrace the cultural diversity immigrants bring but also acknowledge the unique struggles and contributions of immigrant mothers. By amplifying our voices and advocating for our rights, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society that values and supports the immense strength and potential of immigrant mothers.

To Amplify Our Stories

Celebrating Immigration Heritage Month provides a platform to share and honor these narratives, amplifying the voices of those who have overcome significant challenges to build a better life for themselves and their families. By highlighting the human stories behind immigration, we foster empathy, dispel stereotypes, and promote a more nuanced understanding of the immigrant experience.

To Advocate for Change

Statistics reveal a stark reality: immigrant mothers earn a mere 36 cents for every dollar earned by a white man with equivalent qualifications. The gender pay gap is most pronounced for us, placing us at the very bottom of the scale in terms of earning equal pay.
