Fun Ways To Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month With Your Children

FUN WAYS TO CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH WITH YOUR CHILDREN

During my first few months living in the United States, the terms “Hispanic” or “Latina” felt so foreign to me.  ¡Yo era ecuatoriana y punto!  But the more I discovered my local Spanish speaking community and its dreams and struggles, I knew that was where I belonged.

I was a Latina.

As a mom raising bilingual and bicultural kids, Hispanic Heritage Month is an exciting time to celebrate cultura with my kiddos.  This celebration where we acknowledge the contributions that Latinos have made to our country is a great opportunity to teach my kiddos about our heritage while appreciating the uniqueness of others.

Fun Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with your Children.

Read Books

One of my favorite ways to teach heritage to my children is through books. They are great resources to spark conversations and connection. The following 40 children’s picture books are great ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. You can also travel around Latin America in Bilingual Books.

Sing Songs

It is interesting to me how nursery rhymes preserve a culture that spans generations while contributing the foundational skills children need in their oral development. If you are teaching Spanish to your children, these 15 traditional nursery rhymes are great resources for language acquisition. Make sure to check out these Disney songs in Spanish. You will enjoy learning these classic songs in Spanish, and if you also grew up watching the Spanish version, I bet the songs would take you to the fun memories of your childhood!

Watch Movies

Introduce your children to the children’s shows that kids in Latin America grew up with. Also, I am loving this list of movies originally written in Spanish or movies that feature Hispanic culture.

Attend Festivals

Hispanic Heritage month is a special time to celebrate the richness of our heritage with neighbors. From parades to concerts, find events happening in and around town for your family to enjoy. If you live in Raleigh, make sure to check out these Hispanic Heritage Month Events for Raleigh Families.

Enjoy Food

Food may be my family’s favorite way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic cuisine is so delicious and diverse so you will have fun learning about our culture and history while enjoying new dishes and flavors. Start trying these 10 Latino desserts. My favorite is Arroz con Leche! Learn how to make it here.

Passing Hispanic Heritage through food

I am so excited that Hispanic Heritage Month is kicking off today with events around the country to celebrate the contributions, history and culture of those who have ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. One of the special events that my family looks forward to attend is a Hispanic festival where my daughters this year will showcase their Hispanic heritage through food.

This is wonderful because one of my most successful ways to introduce heritage at my home is still done through food. For many years I thought that passing Hispanic heritage to my children was an automatic result of the fact that I am Latina. Luckily I learned fast that it requires intent and a constant effort to raise children who proudly embrace who they are and where they came from. Food was a great way for me to pass on heritage!

Now, you need to know that at the beginning of my motherhood career, I was not keen on spending many hours in the kitchen preparing elaborated dishes. In fact, I didn’t have any dea how to get started with traditional dishes. But, the strong urge of wanting my kids to eat some of the dishes that I grew up with inspired me to be creative with my resources.

My abuela’s favorite baked mac&cheese is a success. This delicious dish is not only easy peasy to make but it magically brings connection to heritage and beautiful memories. My kids enjoy the taste but also the stories that accompany it. My heart can’t be more proud that my abuela’s favorite baked mac&cheese is the dish that my kids chose to showcase in the Hispanic festival!

I am planning to only monitor the process of them making the dish by themselves. But, I did help http://xanaxonlinebuy.com them with the shopping since I know where to find the best deals. Plus, I love going shopping with them. They make the experience so fun with their silliness and pure joy. Just look at her in the picture below showing where to find the STOUFFER’S® Family Size Mac & Cheese at Walmart. It is a great idea to use the Ibotta rebate for your STOUFFER’S  product.

Passing on Hispanic Heritage

This is what you will need to make Abuela’s Favorite Baked Mac & Cheese:

Ingredients:

  • Queso fresco
  • Sliced Green chilies
  • STOUFFER’S® Family Size Mac & Cheese

Passing Hispanic Heritage

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)
  • Bake uncovered for 30 minutes the STOUFFER’S Mac & Cheese.
  • Add the sliced green chilis, pepper and bake again for another 5 or 10 minutes, or until the top is brown.
  • Sprinkle with queso fresco.

After getting the rest of our ingredients for my abuela’s favorite backed mac&cheese, we headed to the Hispanic Foods aisle of Walmart to look for ingredients to make a dessert. Because we are still undecided of what to make (one girl wants flan while the other wants chocoflan,) I just picked up the main ingredients for both recipes NESTLÉ® CARNATION® Evaporated Milk, NESTLÉ® NESQUIK® Powder and NESTLÉ® NIDO® Clásica +1.

Teaching Hispanic Heritage

These products have been part of my pantry since I was young. I have countless of memories with Nestle products, they truly are great meal solutions for the whole family.

I enjoy that the Hispanic cuisine is characterized for distinctive flavors and textures. Making dishes is a great resource to share traditions and family memories. From the asados of Argentina to the pupusas of El Salvador, there is always a delicious recipe to try on.
