Meeting Disney’s Elena of Avalor Head Writer

I shared here about growing up without a Latina animated character and why Elena of Avalor is important. Well, last month, I had the amazing opportunity to meet Silvia Olivas, the co-producer and head writer of the very first Disney Latina princess, Elena of Avalor.

Meeting Silvia Olivas was one of the highlights of my experience at We All Grow Summit in California. I enjoyed listening to Silvia and learning more about the inspiration behind this strong Disney princess who is on a journey to become a ruler and a better person.

Silvia shared with the audience: “Ever since I was a little girl I wanted a Disney Latina princess, and every time I am writing a script, a new episode, I am thinking about the little girls watching. And I am thinking: I see you. You matter. I want to tell your stories”

I LOVE what she said. As a Latina mom, Elena of Avalor represents kids like my children who now can view themselves in a television series. Not only that, but this very first Disney Latina princess is also a great tool to ignite understanding between the non-Latinos on the culture that I care deeply about.

Getting To Know Silvia Olivas

Latinos make up only 2.8% of writers staffed on television shows, and Silvia Olivas is one of them. The day she realized that she wanted to be a writer was when she was a little girl and her mom wrote a letter to the local newspaper about a gambling problem in the community. The newspaper printed the letter and that brought positive changes.

I think it’s amazing how Silvia brings her own experiences to the scripts she writes. For example, did you know that Elena’s abuelos were inspired by her own grandparents? In the series, they are portrayed as an integral part of Elena’s life, a traditional role in the Latino families.

Plus, A Writing Tip From Silvia Olivas

Unfortunately, we were only able to hear Silvia Olivas for 11 minutes. Despite that short amount of time, she still managed to share with us a writing tip!!!

She used an Elena of Avalor’s episode to teach us how to build a theme. This is what she said: “When you think of your story: think to hit the theme. Think: therefore this happens and therefore that happens. Storytelling is problem-solving”

Very cool, right?

13+ Disney Songs in Spanish

Two weeks ago, Disney Parks invited some #WeAllGrow Summit attendees to Disneyland. It was my first time at the happiest place on Earth without my children so everything reminded me of my kids: the castle, the mickey mouse ears, even some spots at the park brought nostalgic memories of our past visits.

However, when the main characters of The Beauty and the Beast surprised the public with a dance, I remembered someone else, seven-year-old Linda watching this movie for the first time on a VHS tape.

As a little girl, I never visited Disney Parks, but you bet all the way in Ecuador I was wearing my princess dresses while singing the songs out loud. You can’t imagine my excitement when I finally was able to take my girls to watch the new movie, Beauty and the Beast. I was looking forward to share parts of my childhood with them and sing the familiar songs together that we three love.

But soon I realized that I have never taught my daughters the Spanish version of my favorite Disney songs. Whaa? I have lost a fun opportunity to help them with their Spanish skills! But more than anything, to connect them in a way with seven-year old Linda.

It’s never too late, so here we go…

4 Tips to Enjoy a Broadway Musical with Children

Taking my seven-year old daughter to experience a Broadway musical has been on my bucket list for a few months. She is in the perfect age to appreciate the magic of those beautiful shows. Thanks to the invitation of the NC Theatre to see their production of the Broadway Production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, we checked off this wish from our list.

Mary Poppins was not only captivating and funny, but the story was a great opportunity to reinforce important values through the magical experience of a Broadway show. The cast was fabulous. One of our favorite ones was Mrs. Andrews, the mean nanny who would make you laugh with her impeccable performance. The music was breathtaking and easy to relate to in so many different ways.

When NC Blogger Network invited me and my girl to attend this show, I knew I wanted to make it an unforgettable experience for her. If you are thinking to take your children to a Broadway production for the first time, these recommendation may help you to ensure you have a “practically perfect in every way” experience.

4 tips to enjoy a broadway musical with children

Talk to your Child What to Expect

As a first time theatergoer, it was important that my seven-year old understood the theater show etiquette. Also, it is a good idea to get familiar with the exits and bathrooms before the show starts. Please, don’t be afraid to ask a team member for assistance. The lady who assisted us last night noticed that my daughter was small for her seat and surprised us with a booster seat! Her kindness marked the start of a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious evening!

Prepare your Child

Broadway shows like Mary Poppins are usually longer than 2 hours so make sure your child has all her needs met. Because it was a school night, I knew my daughter was going to be exhausted at the time when the show would start. So I made a few arrangements to ensure she was well rested.

Take Some Time to Introduce your Child to the Production

My daughter was not familiar with this beloved Disney character before the show. We didn’t have time to watch the movie but sharing the things that I loved about Mary Poppins helped her to get a nice glimpse of the story.

Have Fun

We arrived earlier to enjoy the beautiful sight of the venue and meet and greet with other members of the blogger network in the VIP lounge. Before going to our seats, we took pictures with the props of the theather and enjoyed ourselves. It was a great bonding time for the both of us.

We can’t wait for the 2016-2017 Season where more amazing shows will be presented including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast! If you are interested to have a “practically perfect” evening know that Mary Poppins is the last production for the NC Theater’s 2016-2016 Season and runs till the end of the month. You can purchase your tickets here.

*I was given complimentary tickets for this show. All the opinions expressed in this post are my own.
