Fun Activities and Resources to Teach Numbers in Spanish to Children

My toddler attends a two-year old preschool class where he is learning a lot of fun stuff. Although I am very happy and thankful with his new experiences, this stage reminds me to be more intentional with his Spanish learning. For example, he started learning numbers last week. So I want to make sure I can teach numbers in Spanish at home.

I have to confess that he is obsessed with numbers. He is counting his numbers from sunrise to sunset. Whenever that crazy kid is getting ready to jump (which is 99.9% of his awake time!,) he usually warns me about what is coming with a “1, 2 and 3.” Super kind of him, right? If you are also interested to teach numbers in Spanish to your kids, these fun activities and resources will help you!

Spanish Counting Activities.

As a typical young child, my son’s attention span is super short! That means that I need to be creative and engaging with the resources that I use to reinforce his Spanish learning. I know there are so many great options in the internet and libraries to help us to teach this beautiful language to our children. But, I have found out that the most effective ways to teach Spanish to my kids when they are young is through games and activities.

Teaching numbers is super easy because there are numbers all around. Here are a few suggestions for you:

  1. Point out all the numbers you see when you are out and about: clock, car number plates, telephone numbers, tag prices, etc.
  2. Write the numbers into ten small pieces of paper and hide them round the house. Ask your child to find them and tell you what number they found.
  3. Get a bottle of bubbles from the dollar store and count each bubble together.
  4. Go for a walk and find a group of rocks, leaves or sticks and count them when you are back home
  5. Draw numbers in the sand (or even dirt!)

Teachers often say that immersion is the best way to learn a language. Oftentimes, it’s not an option to immerse yourself into a different language because everyone around you doesn’t speak Spanish. However, having a Spanish learning tool with you on your iPhone or Android wherever you go allows you to be as close as possible to immersion as possible.
