set goals

I love the fresh start of a new year! It is a great excuse to evaluate our life’s journey and think about the things that we can do better. On the new year, do you want to save money? Do you want to lose some weight? Do you want to do better at teaching Spanish to your kids?  I bet you also have a long list of things in your wish list, but how to make these dreams into reachable goals is the question.

Read three important guidelines below that will help you to set goals for the new year. I also have added two bilingual printables to help you!

3 Guidelines To Set Goals for the New Year

1. Write it

For me it is pretty easy to come out with ideas of things I want to do in the new year. But, the odds of success are considerably reduced if I don’t write them down. Taking the time to write your goals is an empowering exercise and helps you to be more intentional about it. Remember that goals without plans are only dreams!

2. Set SMART Goals

I have learned the hard way that in order for goals to be reachable, they should be clear, easy to measure in a specific time and relevant to where you want to go in life. It is important for goals to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time Bound. Yes, they should be S.M.A.R.T!

Setting S.M.A.R.T goals doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t raise the bar high! It is actually the opposite, the higher you rise the bar, the more you will notice the importance of setting S.M.A.R.T goals!

3. Make an Action Plan

Many moons ago I was fluent in Italian. I think somewhere between the time I left Italy and the time I stopped talking regularly to Italian speakers, I lost my fluency in the language.

For the past year or so, I have been wanting to “bring my Italian back.” I thought it was going to be an easy goal (it is somewhere in my brain, right?) So, I never took the time to make an action plan. This goal of mine that I thought to be an easy one to reach didn’t get crossed off this year and stayed as it was: only a dream.

Writing an action plan doesn’t need to be a complex exercise. It just requires us to decide the steps that we’d need to take towards our goal. This will help us to see our progress along the way and stay focused.

Setting Goals Bilingual Printables

There are many areas of our life where we can focus to grow. On this bilingual printable, I am giving you four specific areas (spiritual, health, education and finances) to set goals to. For example, on the spiritual area, maybe this year you want to be closer to God? Or maybe more forgiving? On the Health area, the new year is a great time to start thinking on healthy eating or exercising regularly. On the education area, you can think about new things you’d like to learn or be better at. And I’m sure you have great goals on the finances area! We all can improve at that one, right? 😉
